One just doesn’t take off, solo, on a 17,000 kilometers bike ride. People ask me how I can do this and my answer is simple 'You can too'. I explain that this is the outcome of a gradual process whereby my boundaries have been pushed further. My first touring bike ride was 1350kilometers. Last year I rode 3000 kilometers.

Being alone is also something that needs to be explained. I would like to ride or hike with other people, and I sometimes do, but the particulars of a journey, the route planning, the time, often clash. It's much easier to go alone. One is never really alone when travelling anyway. The independence is something that also develops as you take on more trips, and yeah, it does get harder to find a travel partner.
